Extremely rare and coveted, large art deco lamp made by WMF during the 30s.

This lamp belonged to a very successfull serie of decorative households items made by this famous company and which epitomized the german current of art deco design. ( see excerpt from original 1934 catalog below)

The lamp design as such seems to have been inspired by a similar design by the Maison Desny (see our maison desny section in the Reference Library). The lamp was manufactured using a very complex process of acid etching and applying multiple layers of colours (black and silver) on a silvered brass base.

Many of the very famous german designers of the time worked for WMF.

The traditional Würtembergische Metalfabrik created a special division in their plant, the "Neuen Kunstgewerblichen Abteilung ( NKA) which goal was to produce decorative objects which would be strongly influenced by art nouveau and art deco designs.

These objects bore from that time the special name "Ikora" originates from a south east asian flower which was devoted to the cult of the greek godess Ixora. .
